What to Do in Case of a Water Leak

Having a pipe burst, become punctured, or wear a hole can be devastating to your home. If you do not act quickly, broken water pipes and their leaks can cause structural damage to your home. It can also ruin your belongings and home décor. Having a water leak is also dangerous for your family, especially if you have small children in the house.

So in the case of a water leak, you have to act fast. As soon as you notice the leak, you should shut off water to the area. If you don’t have individual shut offs, you’ll need to shut off the water to the house from outside. You may need to get assistance from your water company to do so, but make sure that it is done quickly.

By shutting the water off to the broken pipe, you can prevent further water damage from happening. Do not be alarmed if the water continues to leak after you shut off the water. It will continue to do so until the hole is repaired or the water is all run out of the pipes.

If you can, you should put a bucket or trash bin under the water leak to catch the water as the pipes drain out. You’ll probably need to change out the bucket a few times before all of the water is spent and stops flowing.
